What it actually means
Slow rhythmic tail thrashing is a documented pre-bite warning. The faster and more lateral the twitch, the closer the cat is to swatting. Many "unprovoked" bites had this warning sign 5-10 seconds prior.
What to do
Stop petting at the first slow tail twitch. The cat is telling you the interaction is becoming too much. Respect = trust = longer future interactions.
